Jamaica youth coach and athletics administrator Trevor Campbell was allegedly attacked by three students following Friday night’s National Senior and Junior Athletic Championship.
According to the Jamaica Observer, who first reported the story, the official was set-upon by the students following the conclusion of the second day of the meet after being involved in a verbal exchange earlier at the event.
The dispute reportedly stemmed from the official’s request that one of the athletes remove some objects from his person before competing in the event, as per international requirements. The athlete is said to have taken exception to the incident.
Campbell, who witnesses claim was wrestling with one of the students after being attacked, later fell to the floor after being hit with a piece of iron by another.
The incident is, however, yet to be confirmed by either Campbell the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association [JAAA] or the National Stadium Police who have jurisdiction over the area.
The law enforcers claimed to have received no official report of the incident. The paper further reported that the incident was being dealt was as an internal matter by the JAAA.
