Dina Asher-Smith was in brilliant form at the Müller British Championships on Saturday as she stormed to a championship record.
Competing in great conditions on the first of two days at the Alexander Stadium, the 22-year-old sped to a terrific 10.97 clocking as she beat Daryll Neita (11.19) and Bianca Williams (11.20) to the national 100m title.
“I was looking to come here and run a fast time and I was really happy to have been able to do that, especially in front of a British crowd,” said Asher-Smith.
“The wind was crazy in the heats, so I was just hoping it would die down, because I felt like I was in good shape, and thankfully it did. Across both the men’s and women’s sprint events, the competition is so hot, which obviously bodes well for the Europeans and heading into the next Olympic cycle.”
Morgan Lake also enjoyed a tremendous day in the high jump as she equalled Isobel Pooley’s championship record with a PB of 1.97m and beat Katarina Johnson-Thompson for the first time as the Commonwealth heptathlon champion finished runner-up with 1.90m, with Nikki Manson earning bronze with an outdoor PB of 1.87m.
After failing her first attempt at 1.79m, Lake soon got into her stride with a first-time clearance at 1.83m, second-time clearance at 1.87m and third-time clearance at 1.90m. She then passed 1.95m before going over 1.97m at her second try.
